"Corona" aka "Punto coronato" ("coronatA" in some historical sources) is a fermata, a symbol of musical notation - a crowned dot or, colloquially, "a cyclops eye". This symbol indicates that the note or rest is to be extended beyond the normal measure. Exactly how much longer it is held is at the discretion of the performer or conductor. When the conductor shows the orchestra a fermata, not only does the music linger but time itself gets put on hold. It seems to me that the "chief conductor" from the very top has put a fermata over all mankind.
The passacaglia is a 17th century Spanish "farewell dance" in 3/4 time that became a popular form of Baroque works - with a melancholy character and a repeating line of the lower voice.
"PUNTO CORONATA quasi una passacaglia" is a work by Vladimir Genin, composed during the 1st Lockdown in March 2020.
A new version of Punto Coronata quasi una passacaglia, this time for organ.
Unfortunately, the organ currently looks like a sick one and wears a kind of grey mask (which starts to rattle and clang on some pedal notes). But at the end you see the same organ, but already a healthy one. I had to record fragmentarily, because the organ switches stops pneumatically and sounds accordingly in the church - like a pistol shot.
As I promised, this piece, written at the beginning of the pandemic exactly one year ago, will be revealed to the world in various forms. There are alre
ady some versions for solo piano, film with violin and guitar, now organ, preparatory blues version in jazz quartet, and hopefully one day all the other versions will be played, up to and including symphony orchestra (and they already exist).
Then all the variants will have been played through - the pandemic will be over. |
