VLADIMIR GENIN's CD "LES FLEURS DU MAL"- RECORDING OF THE MONTH:
The feeling of synergy between the musicians and this music as well as between each other is complete and would be hard to surpass. This is a major song-cycle, and I am delighted that it has been given such a fine recording as this. There are those who claim contemporary music has nothing more to say, but if you want to render these people speechless you can confront them with Les fleurs du Mal.

Die Uraufführung von Genins Komposition verlangte den beiden Musikern – sichtbar und spürbar – alles ab. Beim Spiel der schwierigen Sonate, die laut Genin ähnlich wie ein Gemälde Szenen des Lebens abbildet und Gefühle – Trauer, Leidenschaft, Leichtigkeit – transportiert, schufen die Musiker Valeriy Sokolov und Olga Domnina einen Kosmos an Klangbildern und Stimmungen, die ihnen große musikalische Präzision abverlangte.

SEVEN MELODIES FOR THE DIAL, piano circle
Im heutigen CD-Repertoire ist es eher selten, dass absolut neue Klavierzyklen aufgenommen werden. Dieser hier eingespielte Klavierzyklus stammt von 2011 und wurde von dem russischen Komponisten Vladimir Genin (* 1958) für die Interpretin Olga Domnina geschrieben. <…> Inspirieren ließ sich der Komponist, der heute in München lebt, zu seinem Klavierzyklus „Seven Melodies for the Dial“ von einem Shakespeare-Sonett. Entstanden ist ein Charakter-Zyklus, der unterschiedlichste Ausdrucksmittel bereithält. <…> Genin findet zu einer durchweg eigenen, deutlich pianistischen Tonsprache. Dabei nutzt er alle Möglichkeiten des Instruments aus, den gesamten Tonumfang ebenso wie auch dynamische Auslotungen. <…> Es ist ein spannungsgeladener und grandios interpretierter Zyklus, der da neu entstanden ist.

I’m not always a guaranteed fan of large-scale piano works, but this is powerful stuff. <…> References to other composers are brought in here as a subjective reference point. You will perhaps hear other associations in this music, but while it builds on strong traditions this work is by no means derivative.

De cyclus duurt 55 minuten maar is geen minuut te lang. <…> de Seven melodies van Genin bieden genoeg stof tot nadenken zelfs voor een niet filosofisch aan gelegde luisteraar. Het voorwoord in het CD-boekje herinnert aan de woorden van de Russische dichteres Marina Tsvetajeva: iemand die met zijn tijd mee wil gaan, creëert zijn tijd. Deze woorden zijn zonder meer van toepassing op Olga Domnina en Vladimir Genin die door hun eigen tijd te creëren, de nieuwe, eigen regels aan het muziek verhaal van onze tijd toevoegen.

The artistic style of Vladimir Genin is extremely natural – it is feeling intonational and rhythmical life in every second; on the other hand, it is quite peculiar, being an amazing combination of “tradition” and “today”. The author’s way of thinking is paradoxical in this sense, as everything genuinely live is. The composer is not bound by any conventionalities, his style is completely free, but also strict and perfected, and his musical language is beautiful with some inner beauty that makes your thought and hearing revisit the bright and tragic world of his sounds and their inner silence... <…> Genin has his own piano style: a style of profound feeling, a distinct, subtle style, yet fearless in its treatment of the pianistic texture. Without doubt, this is a post-Romantic style, but one which is possible only in the 20th-21th centuries. Genin’s piano breathes freely in a wide space, yet it is terrifying in its rhythmic power. Genin’s intellect as a composer is exceptionally high, but this intellect completely vanishes in the burning flame of existential musical experience, emotional catastrophes, and subtle expressive stereophony.
